From Radstock to Radio 1 – Drivetime presenter in Christmas Takeover
Written by Somer Valley FM on 10/12/2021
Somer Valley FM, the local radio station for North East Somerset, based in Midsomer Norton, is feeling hugely proud with one of their broadcasters, Seb Bailey, presenting special Radio 1 Anthem shows over Christmas.
Seb, who presents Drivetime weekdays at 3pm on Somer Valley FM, said ‘Keeping this news under wraps has been incredibly difficult. As the Somer Valley listeners know, I share everything with them! I’m so excited to be given this opportunity and cover two shows on BBC Radio 1 this new year’.
‘It’s a dream come true’, Seb continued, ‘and the imposter syndrome is out to play big time! Whilst I know a lot of hard work goes into things, I only do it because I love it. Not to gain things. All that’s left to say in the meantime is thank you to Somer Valley FM. It’s a bedrock for the area it broadcasts to, as it a hive of talent.’
‘Without it I wouldn’t be doing things like this. And whilst I’d normally be all Somer Valley FM, perhaps on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day wake up and put Radio 1 on. You might just hear me!’
‘We have had a fantastic year here at Somer Valley FM’, Richard Burgess, Station Manager added ‘along with developing some great sponsor and advertiser relationships, which is crucial for running costs, and providing a first-class radio listen for our local community, I see developing talent as part of our role. I want us to enable presenters, producers and people with media aspirations to hone their skills, moving onwards and upwards in the entertainment sector.’
Richard added ‘competition is fierce to be on national radio. I’ve seen Seb work so hard on honing his skills, incorporating much advice from the radio industry, and always bouncing back after disappointment. He has all the skills, and whilst I’ll be hugely disappointed to lose him, and Milo his gorgeous dog who so many listeners now know from Somer Valley FM, he is a credit to radio, and his family, and I’ve no doubt he’ll be a big success on Radio 1. He is a recent award winner with us; we all want him to do great!’
Apart from Seb presenting on Radio 1, two other volunteers at Somer Valley FM this year have also progressed, now working at ViacomCBS Networks International, and Kindred Spirit Magazine.
‘I’m going to repeat myself, but anyone interested in a media career, particularly in radio, really should contact us if they want help to progress’ said Richard.
If this has whetted anyone’s appetite to be involved with local radio, presenting, producing, sourcing stories – get in touch.
